Peptide Therapy FAQ

Everything you need to know about peptide therapy at Keystone Wellness & Weight Loss Center in Reading, PA.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the body. They communicate with cells, glands, and organs to trigger specific biological responses such as healing, hormone release, immune function, and cellular repair. Because they are naturally occurring compounds, they work with your body rather than overriding it.
Most peptides we offer are used in wellness and research settings and are not FDA-approved for all uses described. Tesamorelin is one exception — it is FDA-approved for visceral fat reduction. All peptide therapies at Keystone are administered under medical supervision and require a phone screening and provider consultation before starting.
Our phone consultation and provider intake process is designed to determine exactly that. We review your full medical history, current medications, health goals, and lab work before recommending any protocol. Your plan will be customized specifically for you. Call us at 610-340-4569 to get started.
No — peptide therapy cannot be booked online at this time. Because peptides require thorough medical screening, all new peptide patients must complete a phone screening with our team before scheduling. Please call us at 610-340-4569 to begin the process.
Standard workplace drug tests do not screen for peptides. However, if you are a competitive athlete subject to anti-doping regulations (WADA, USADA, etc.), some peptides — particularly growth hormone secretagogues — may be prohibited. Always check with your sport's governing body before starting any peptide protocol.
Occasional moderate alcohol is generally acceptable, but alcohol can blunt growth hormone release, reducing effectiveness of GH-stimulating peptides like Sermorelin, Ipamorelin, and CJC-1295. For best results, minimize alcohol — especially around injection time. Discuss your specific protocol with your provider.
Do not double up on your next dose. Simply skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. If you find yourself missing doses frequently, contact your provider so we can discuss whether your protocol needs to be adjusted.
Most peptides are administered via subcutaneous injection using a small insulin-style needle. Some like GHK-Cu are also available topically. Your provider will demonstrate proper technique and provide written instructions. Most patients are comfortable self-administering at home after a brief training session.
Most peptide vials should be refrigerated (36–46°F) and kept away from light. Once reconstituted, they are typically stable for 28–30 days when refrigerated. Do not freeze reconstituted peptides or leave them in heat or direct sunlight. Your provider will give specific storage instructions for your exact product.
Results vary by peptide, goals, and individual biology. Some patients notice improved sleep, energy, and recovery within 2–4 weeks. Body composition and healing benefits typically develop over 6–12 weeks. Peptides work gradually and cumulatively — consistency with your protocol is the most important factor.
Most peptides are well-tolerated when used appropriately. Common mild side effects include injection site redness, temporary water retention, mild fatigue, or tingling. More significant risks vary by peptide — GH-stimulating peptides are contraindicated with active cancer. Our full medical screening process exists specifically to protect your safety.
Many peptides can be safely used alongside common medications, but this must be evaluated individually. There are important interactions — for example, Tesamorelin should not be used with glucocorticoids. Always disclose all current medications and supplements to your provider during the intake process.

Have Questions?

GLP-1 Therapy FAQ

Real answers to the questions our GLP-1 patients ask most often — about water, protein, side effects, plateaus, and what life on (and after) GLP-1 looks like.

Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day — for example, a 180-lb person should target around 90 oz daily. Water is one of the most important things you can do on GLP-1 therapy. Because the medication slows gastric emptying and reduces your hunger and thirst cues, dehydration is one of the most common reasons patients feel fatigued, nauseous, dizzy, or constipated. If plain water is hard to drink, add electrolytes (like LMNT, Liquid I.V. with no added sugar, or our IV hydration drips) to make it count even more.
Most patients should aim for 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of goal body weight — so if your goal weight is 150 lbs, that’s 105–150g of protein per day. Protein is critical on GLP-1 therapy because rapid weight loss can cause muscle loss along with fat loss, and protein helps preserve lean muscle. Front-load your protein at breakfast (when appetite is usually strongest) and consider a protein shake on days when food feels hard. Your provider will personalize this number based on your goals and lab work.
Not necessarily — but it’s an honest conversation, not a yes or no. GLP-1 medications work by helping regulate appetite and metabolic signaling, and for many patients, they’re a long-term tool similar to medications for blood pressure or thyroid function. Others successfully transition to a maintenance protocol at a much lower dose, or off the medication entirely once they’ve built sustainable habits around nutrition, movement, and lifestyle. We’ll work with you to find what fits your goals, your body, and your life — with the understanding that there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
Maintenance is the phase after you’ve reached your goal weight. For most patients, that means staying on a lower, less frequent dose of your GLP-1 medication — often a microdose or every-other-week dosing — combined with continued focus on protein, hydration, strength training, and sleep. Monthly check-ins typically transition to less frequent visits. The goal is to maintain your results without the medication doing all the heavy lifting, so your habits become the foundation. We’ll customize your maintenance plan based on how your body responds.
Common and expected: mild nausea, fullness after small meals, occasional constipation, fatigue, and reduced appetite — especially in the first few weeks or after a dose increase. These usually improve with time, hydration, smaller meals, and fiber.

Call us at 610-340-4569 right away if you experience: severe or persistent vomiting, intense abdominal pain (especially radiating to your back), signs of dehydration (dizziness, dark urine, no urination), severe constipation lasting more than several days, or any allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing). We’d rather hear from you and reassure you than have you tough it out.
Plateaus are completely normal and almost every GLP-1 patient hits one. Your body is incredibly smart and adapts to a new normal — this isn’t failure, it’s biology. Plateaus often happen around the 3- to 6-month mark and can last several weeks. Common causes include not enough protein, not enough water, dropping calories too low (which slows metabolism), needing a dose adjustment, or your body simply needing time to recalibrate. Don’t panic and don’t double up. Bring it up at your monthly visit — we’ll look at the whole picture together and adjust.
You can, but you’ll likely notice that alcohol hits very differently on GLP-1. Many patients report feeling the effects much faster, with significantly less alcohol than before. Alcohol also adds empty calories, can worsen nausea and reflux, and slows progress. If you do drink, hydrate well before and after, eat protein with it, and stick to lower-sugar options. Many of our patients find their relationship with alcohol naturally changes on GLP-1 — often for the better.
Because protecting your muscle is one of the most important things you can do during weight loss. Up to 25–40% of weight lost on GLP-1 medications can come from lean muscle if you don’t actively work to preserve it — and muscle loss slows metabolism, weakens your body, and makes regaining weight more likely. Aim for strength training 2–3 times per week. This doesn’t have to be a gym — bodyweight, resistance bands, or our in-house Pilates classes all count. Combined with adequate protein, this is the formula for sustainable, healthy results.
Do not double up on your next dose. If you remember within a day or two of your scheduled dose, take it as soon as possible and resume your normal weekly schedule. If it’s been longer than that, call us at 610-340-4569 — depending on how long it’s been, we may need to adjust your next dose down to avoid restart-related side effects.
No. GLP-1 medications are not recommended during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. If you are planning to become pregnant, we recommend stopping your medication at least 2 months before trying to conceive to allow it to fully clear your system. If you become pregnant while on GLP-1, contact your provider and OB immediately. Please use reliable contraception while on therapy, and let us know if your reproductive plans change.
Periodic lab work helps us monitor your health and personalize your care. We typically check things like kidney and liver function, blood sugar, thyroid, and key nutrient levels that can be affected by rapid weight loss or reduced food intake. Lab work helps us catch deficiencies early, adjust your protocol or supplement stack, and confirm that GLP-1 therapy continues to be the right fit for you.
Our GLP-1 medication itself is cash-pay — we do not bill insurance for the medication. However, your office visits are billed to your health insurance when we participate with your plan.

Medication pricing is transparent: Semaglutide is $181 per vial, and Tirzepatide is $260 per 100-unit vial or $455 per 300-unit vial. Pricing includes the medication, syringes, alcohol pads, and a starter sharps container. No memberships, no hidden fees. Many patients find this all-in approach is comparable to (or less than) the copays and out-of-pocket costs they’d face going through insurance for the medication itself — with significantly more personalized care.

Aesthetics & Injectables FAQ

Honest answers about Botox, fillers, recovery, and what to expect from your aesthetic treatments at Keystone.

All three are neurotoxins that temporarily relax muscles to soften wrinkles — they’re cousins, not opposites. Botox is the original, with the longest track record. Jeuveau works similarly to Botox at a similar duration, often at a friendlier price point. Daxxify is the newest and tends to last longer (up to 6 months for some patients) thanks to a unique stabilizing peptide. Your injector will help you choose based on your goals, sensitivity, and budget.
Neurotoxins (Botox, Jeuveau): typically 3–4 months. Daxxify: 4–6 months for many patients. Dermal fillers: 6–18 months depending on the product, the area treated, and your metabolism. Your first treatment may not last as long as subsequent ones — results often build with consistency. We’ll help you plan a maintenance schedule that fits your goals.
Most patients describe injectables as a quick pinch or stinging sensation — uncomfortable but very tolerable, and over in seconds. Botox uses extremely fine needles. For dermal fillers, we use products that contain built-in lidocaine (numbing agent), and we can apply a topical numbing cream beforehand to make you even more comfortable. Most patients are surprised by how easy it is.
No — not with us. Our entire injection philosophy is built around natural, refreshed results. Our nurse injectors are highly trained in conservative dosing and proper technique, with the goal of softening lines and enhancing your features without changing who you are. You should look like a more rested, more confident version of yourself — not like a different person. If you have specific concerns about how much movement you want to keep, just tell us — we’ll customize accordingly.
“Ozempic face” is the casual term for the volume loss in the face that can happen with rapid weight loss — including from GLP-1 medications. Cheeks can flatten, undereyes can hollow, and skin can look more drawn or tired even though you feel great. We treat this with strategically placed dermal fillers in the cheeks, temples, and undereye area, and increasingly with EZ Gel — a more natural option made from your own blood that restores volume gradually. Many of our GLP-1 patients build aesthetic touch-ups right into their wellness plan.
They do completely different things. Botox (and Daxxify, Jeuveau) relaxes muscles to prevent wrinkles caused by facial expressions — think forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, and crow’s feet. Filler adds volume back to areas that have lost it — cheeks, lips, undereye hollows, and the lines around the mouth. Many patients use both: Botox for prevention and movement, filler for restoration and contour.
Neurotoxins: you’ll start seeing softening at 3–5 days, with full results at about 2 weeks. Filler: you’ll see immediate results, but expect some swelling for the first few days — the “final” look settles in around 2 weeks. We typically schedule a 2-week follow-up so we can assess and add small touch-ups if needed.
Botox/Daxxify/Jeuveau: essentially zero downtime — you can return to work and most activities right away. Avoid lying flat, working out, or rubbing the area for 4–6 hours. Filler: mild swelling and possible bruising for 2–5 days. Microneedling, PRF, EZ Gel: 2–3 days of redness and slight peeling. We’ll give you a written aftercare guide for every treatment. Plan ahead if you have a big event — treat at least 2 weeks before.
There’s no magic age — it’s about your skin, your concerns, and your goals. Many patients start “preventative” Botox in their late 20s or early 30s to slow the formation of expression lines. Others wait until their 40s or 50s. There’s also no upper age limit — we treat patients in their 70s and beyond who want to feel as confident as they look. The right answer comes from a conversation, not a number.
No. We do not perform Botox, Daxxify, Jeuveau, dermal fillers, or other injectables during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While there’s no definitive evidence of harm, there’s also no safety data confirming it’s safe — and that’s a line we won’t cross. We’d love to see you back as soon as you’ve finished breastfeeding. In the meantime, we offer pregnancy-safe facials and skincare to help you feel pampered.
Microneedling uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering your body’s natural collagen production — great for texture, fine lines, and acne scars. PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) takes it further by using your own blood’s growth factors, applied topically during microneedling for amplified rejuvenation. EZ Gel is PRF transformed into a soft injectable gel, used as a natural filler alternative to restore volume and soften hollows — especially nice for the undereye area. All three use your own biology, just in different forms.
For 24–48 hours before: avoid blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol — these increase bruising risk. (Do NOT stop prescribed medications without your doctor’s approval.) Day of: come with a clean, makeup-free face if possible, eat beforehand, and stay well-hydrated. We have a full Pre & Post Care guide further down this page with details for every service.
