Peptide Therapy FAQ

Everything you need to know about peptide therapy at Keystone Wellness & Weight Loss Center in Reading, PA.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just in much smaller sequences. Your body produces thousands of them naturally, and they act as signaling molecules that tell cells what to do.

Insulin is a peptide. So is the hormone that tells your body you’re full after a meal. Peptide therapy uses specific sequences to support processes that naturally decline with age or become disrupted by stress, illness, or injury.

Rather than replacing a hormone outright, most peptides work by signaling — encouraging your body to do more of something it already knows how to do.

That’s a meaningful distinction. It’s why peptide protocols are often designed to work alongside your body’s existing rhythms rather than override them, and why your provider will build a protocol around your specific goals rather than a one-size-fits-all prescription.

Patients typically come to us with goals in a few broad areas:

  • Recovery and tissue repair — particularly patients recovering from orthopedic injury or surgery, or active adults dealing with wear and tear
  • Body composition — often alongside a medically supervised weight loss program
  • Energy, sleep quality, and vitality
  • Skin quality and the visible signs of aging
  • Immune support

Your provider will talk with you honestly about what’s realistic for your situation and whether peptide therapy is the right tool — or whether something else would serve you better.

When prescribed by a qualified provider, dosed appropriately, and sourced from a licensed pharmacy, peptides have a reassuring safety profile for appropriately selected patients. The risks come from the other path — buying unregulated products online, self-dosing, or using products sold as “research chemicals” with no oversight of purity or content.

Every peptide we prescribe comes from a licensed compounding pharmacy, is prescribed by a licensed provider after evaluation, and is monitored with follow-up. That structure is the safety.

This deserves a straight answer, because there’s a lot of noise online.

Some peptides are FDA-approved medications. Many others are prescribed off-label or prepared by compounding pharmacies, which means they have not gone through FDA approval for these specific uses. In recent years the FDA has also restricted certain peptides from being compounded at all.

What that means practically: we prescribe only what is legally available and what our providers determine is appropriate for you. If you’ve read about a peptide we don’t offer, there’s usually a regulatory or safety reason, and we’re happy to explain it.

Generally, adults in reasonably good health with a specific goal — recovery, body composition, energy, skin quality — who are willing to commit to a protocol and follow-up.

Peptide therapy tends to work best as part of a broader plan. Patients who are also sleeping, eating, and moving reasonably well see considerably better results than those hoping a peptide will substitute for those things.

Peptide therapy is not appropriate for everyone. Your provider will review your full history, but it’s generally not recommended if you are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive; have an active or recent history of cancer; or have certain endocrine, kidney, or liver conditions.

This is exactly why the evaluation comes first. Some patients we see are better served by a different approach entirely, and we will tell you that.

  • Consultation. We review your health history, current medications, symptoms, and what you’re hoping to achieve.
  • Your protocol. Your provider builds a plan specific to you and reviews exactly how to use it.
  • Follow-up. We check in on how you’re responding and adjust. Peptide therapy is not a prescription you fill and forget.
Yes — you can book a peptide consultation online any time, or call us at 610-340-4569 if you would rather speak with our team first. Your provider reviews your health history, medications, and goals with you at the consultation and builds your protocol from there.

Most are given as a small subcutaneous injection using a very fine needle — similar to what patients on weight loss medication already use, and far less uncomfortable than most people expect. Some are available as capsules, troches, or topicals depending on the peptide.

We teach you how to administer it before you leave, and you can always call us if you have questions between visits.

It varies by peptide and by person. Some patients notice changes in sleep or energy within the first few weeks. Changes in body composition, recovery, and skin quality generally take longer — often two to three months — because those reflect real tissue-level change rather than a quick effect.

Be cautious of anyone promising dramatic results in days. That is not how this works.

The most common are mild and localized: redness, itching, or slight swelling at the injection site. Some patients report temporary flushing, headache, or fatigue when starting.

Side effects vary by peptide, and your provider will review what to expect with yours and what would warrant a call to us.

Many peptides can be safely used alongside common medications, but this must be evaluated individually. There are important interactions — for example, Tesamorelin should not be used with glucocorticoids. Always disclose all current medications and supplements to your provider during the intake process.
Do not double up on your next dose. Simply skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. If you find yourself missing doses frequently, contact your provider so we can discuss whether your protocol needs to be adjusted.
Most peptide vials should be refrigerated (36–46°F) and kept away from light. Once reconstituted, they are typically stable for 28–30 days when refrigerated. Do not freeze reconstituted peptides or leave them in heat or direct sunlight. Your provider will give specific storage instructions for your exact product.
Occasional moderate alcohol is generally acceptable, but alcohol can blunt growth hormone release, reducing effectiveness of GH-stimulating peptides like Sermorelin, Ipamorelin, and CJC-1295. For best results, minimize alcohol — especially around injection time. Discuss your specific protocol with your provider.
Standard workplace drug tests do not screen for peptides. However, if you are a competitive athlete subject to anti-doping regulations (WADA, USADA, etc.), some peptides — particularly growth hormone secretagogues — may be prohibited. Always check with your sport's governing body before starting any peptide protocol.

Peptide therapy is a self-pay service and is not billed to insurance. Cost depends on which peptide is prescribed, your dose, and the length of your protocol — which is why we discuss pricing at your consultation, once we know what you actually need.

We’ll always give you a clear total before you commit to anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

IV Therapy & Vitamin Injections

Everything you might want to know before your first drip — what we offer, what it can realistically do, and who shouldn’t have one.

IV therapy delivers fluids, vitamins, and minerals directly into your bloodstream through a small catheter placed in a vein in your arm. Because it bypasses your digestive system entirely, your body can use what’s delivered right away rather than absorbing a fraction of it over hours.

Every drip at Keystone is administered under medical supervision by trained clinical staff. Most appointments take between thirty and sixty minutes.

Myers’ CocktailThe original wellness drip and our most requested. A balanced blend of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C that supports energy, immune function, and overall wellbeing.
ImmunityHigh-dose vitamin C, zinc, and B-complex, built for cold and flu season, travel, and anyone feeling run-down.
Performance & RecoveryFluids, B-complex, magnesium, and electrolytes to replenish what gets depleted by exertion, travel, or illness.
TimelessOur beauty and anti-aging drip — glutathione, vitamin C, B-complex, and biotin for antioxidant support that works from the inside out.
AlleviateFormulated for the days each month that derail everything, supporting comfort, mood, and energy.
Saline Hydration (500 ml)Straightforward rehydration. No add-ins, just fluid volume restored far faster than drinking it.
Glutathione IV PushA concentrated dose of the body’s master antioxidant, supporting skin brightness, detoxification, and cellular defense — given as a quick IV push rather than a full drip.

We also offer vitamin injections — quick intramuscular shots with no IV required, including Tri-Immune Boost, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and Lipo-Stat.

You don’t have to decide alone. Tell us what’s going on — you’re exhausted, you’re getting over something, you’ve got a big weekend ahead, your skin looks dull — and we’ll point you toward the right option. A brief consultation before your first drip helps us make sure the one you’ve picked is appropriate for you.

If you’re new to IV therapy, most patients start with the Myers’ Cocktail.

Sometimes, and it depends on the situation. IV delivery bypasses the gut, which matters if you have a condition that affects absorption, you’re significantly dehydrated, or you need higher levels of a nutrient than oral supplements can practically deliver.

That said, we’ll be straight with you: if you’re generally healthy, eating reasonably well, and absorbing nutrients normally, a good oral supplement may serve you just as well for daily maintenance. IV therapy tends to be most useful in specific circumstances rather than as a permanent substitute for the basics. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

IV therapy is not appropriate for everyone, and some of these are serious. Please tell us about any of the following during your consultation — several of them will change what we can safely offer you.

  • G6PD deficiency. This inherited enzyme condition can cause a dangerous breakdown of red blood cells when exposed to high-dose vitamin C.
  • Kidney disease or reduced kidney function. Your kidneys manage the fluid and mineral load an IV delivers. Impaired function makes that load risky.
  • Heart failure, or any condition involving fluid restriction. Additional IV fluid can overwhelm a heart that’s already struggling to keep up.
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • A history of kidney stones. High-dose vitamin C can increase oxalate levels and stone risk.
  • Hemochromatosis or iron overload. Vitamin C increases iron absorption.
  • Pregnancy or nursing. Provider evaluation is required before any drip.
  • Known allergy to any component, including B vitamins, thiamine, or preservatives.
  • Asthma, specifically for glutathione, which has rarely been associated with bronchospasm in sensitive patients.
  • Bleeding disorders or blood thinners, which affect the safety of placing an IV.
  • Active infection or acute illness. If you are genuinely sick, you need a physician, not a wellness drip. We’ll tell you that.

This list isn’t exhaustive, which is exactly why we review your full health history and current medications before your first appointment.

The most common are minor and related to the IV itself: bruising, tenderness, or mild swelling where the catheter was placed. Some patients notice a cool sensation in the arm or a metallic or vitamin taste during the infusion. Magnesium can cause a brief feeling of warmth or flushing.

Less common but more significant risks include infection at the IV site, vein inflammation, electrolyte imbalance, fluid overload, and allergic reaction. Serious complications are rare in appropriately screened patients receiving treatment under medical supervision — which is precisely why screening and supervision matter.

Tell your nurse immediately if you feel short of breath, lightheaded, develop chest tightness, or feel anything that doesn’t seem right.

It depends on the drip and your goals. Some patients come monthly for maintenance, others seasonally through the winter, and others only when they need it. Your provider will recommend a schedule that makes sense for you.

More is not automatically better. We’d rather build a sensible rhythm than sell you a drip you don’t need.

  • Eat beforehand. Arriving on an empty stomach makes lightheadedness far more likely.
  • Drink water in the hours before. Well-hydrated veins are easier to access.
  • Wear something with sleeves that move — short sleeves or loose ones.
  • Bring your medication and supplement list, including anything over the counter.
  • Afterward, keep drinking water, keep the bandage on for a few hours, and go easy on strenuous activity for the rest of the day.

Call us if you develop increasing pain, redness, or swelling at the IV site over the following days.

IV therapy and vitamin injections are self-pay wellness services and are not billed to insurance. Pricing is straightforward and posted — ask us or call and we’ll walk you through the menu.

Book online any time, or call us if you’d rather talk it through first — no lab work needed beforehand. For your first visit we’ll review your health history and talk through which option fits what you’re after, including telling you honestly if IV therapy isn’t the right answer for your situation.

Book online and we’ll help you choose the right drip for what you need.
